Maddy summaryThe Healthcare Workforce Resilience Act (HR 6205) reallocates unused employment-based immigrant visas from fiscal years 1992-2021 to directly support foreign nurses and physicians seeking permanent residency in the U.S. It creates 40,000 new visas - 25,000 for nurses and 15,000 for physicians - available only to those with petitions filed within three years of the bill’s enactment. The bill includes expedited processing without fees, exempts these visas from country limits, and requires employers to attest that hiring foreign workers won’t displace U.S. workers. This policy change specifically targets healthcare staffing shortages by streamlining pathways for qualified foreign healthcare professionals.

Maddy summaryHCONRES 74 is a non-binding congressional resolution expressing support for the Geneva Consensus Declaration, a 2020 agreement signed by 36 countries affirming that no international right to abortion exists, protecting life at all stages, and prioritizing the family as society's foundation. It urges the U.S. to rejoin this declaration, which the Biden administration temporarily withdrew from, while noting existing U.S. laws already prohibit federal funding for abortions or coercive family planning abroad. Maddy summaryThe 21st Century Dyslexia Act amends the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to add a clear definition of dyslexia as a specific learning disability and requires schools to provide equal access to accommodations and services for all eligible children with dyslexia, including those from low-income families, low socioeconomic status families, and limited English proficient children. The bill defines dyslexia as an unexpected difficulty in reading due to challenges in processing the sounds of language, which affects reading, spelling, and speaking abilities. This change ensures students with dyslexia are explicitly recognized under IDEA and schools must provide inclusive support without barriers related to background. The bill directly affects students with dyslexia and their schools by mandating these specific recognition and access requirements.

Health Care Practitioner Disaster Protection Act This bill extends certain liability protections available for health care practitioners who provide voluntary health care services in declared emergencies through a community health center other than the one that initially sponsored them. Current law makes the liability protections available to volunteer practitioners that are sponsored by a particular community health center. This bill maintains the liability protections for a volunteer practitioner who provides services through a different community health center if the center (1) seeks the assistance of the volunteer practitioner to respond to a declared emergency, and (2) promptly notifies the Department of Health and Human Services that the volunteer practitioner will be providing services.
