Provides employment protections during the performance of state active duty by members of the national guard

Maddy summaryThis bill clarifies and updates state laws to protect the jobs of National Guard members while they perform state active duty. It ensures that employers must restore these service members to their previous positions or equivalent roles with the same seniority, status, and pay upon their return, provided they meet specific eligibility criteria. The legislation also sets clear deadlines for applying for reemployment and outlines legal recourse, including court orders and potential wage compensation, if an employer fails to comply. Additionally, it defines "military service" to explicitly include state active duty orders issued by the governor, thereby broadening the scope of protections for National Guard personnel.

Establishes a real property tax exemption for widows and widowers of police officers killed in the line of duty

Maddy summaryThis bill creates a real estate tax break for the primary homes of widows and widowers whose spouses were police officers killed in the line of duty. It allows local governments to exempt up to 50% of the property's assessed value from taxes, though they retain the right to lower this percentage if they choose. The law also clarifies how the exemption applies to properties held in trust or cooperative apartments, while requiring specific documentation to prove eligibility. Local officials must adopt their own laws or resolutions to activate these tax reductions, and the state will provide a list of acceptable records to help verify claims.
