Existing law establishes the system of public elementary and secondary schools in this state. Existing law states the policy of the State of California to afford all persons in public schools, regardless of their disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, nationality, race or ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or any other specified characteristic, equal rights and opportunities in the educational institutions of the state, and states that the purpose of related existing law is to prohibit acts that are contrary to that policy and to provide remedies therefor. This bill would make nonsubstantive changes to the provision specifying the purpose of the related existing law.

Existing law requires the creation of criminal justice and delinquency prevention planning districts for the purposes of coordinating local criminal justice activities and planning for the use of state and federal action funds made available through grant programs. Existing law authorizes the number and boundaries of those districts to be altered, as specified. This bill would make technical, nonsubstantive changes to those provisions.

This measure would designate the month of January 2018 as Gang Awareness and Prevention Month in the State of California and would encourage cities and constituents across the state to observe the month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities to prevent future gang activity and honor those who lost their lives due to gang activity.
