Provides a heart disease presumption for correction officers, correction supervisors, deputy sheriff patrol or deputy sheriff patrol supervisors

Maddy summaryThis bill creates a legal presumption that heart disease affecting correction officers, correction supervisors, deputy sheriff patrols, and deputy sheriff patrol supervisors in New York was caused by their work. Under the new rules, these employees would automatically be considered to have developed their heart condition while on duty unless the state can prove they had a pre-existing heart issue before starting their job. The legislation applies to members of the state and local employees' retirement system and allows them to receive disability benefits or death benefits for heart-related conditions without needing to prove a direct link to their daily tasks. The law takes effect immediately upon passage.

Relates to removing the ten year time period from the crime of persistent sexual abuse

Maddy summaryThis bill removes the ten-year time limit for charging the crime of persistent sexual abuse, allowing prosecutors to pursue cases based on past actions regardless of how much time has passed. It directly affects individuals who have previously been convicted of specific sexual offenses, such as forcible touching or sexual abuse, by eliminating the requirement that new convictions occur within a decade of the prior ones. The law still requires that a person has been convicted two or more times for these crimes in separate incidents, and it excludes any time spent in prison from the calculation of the time period. Once passed, this change expands the window in which the state can bring charges for this specific felony offense.
