Makes permanent provisions creating a presumption relating to certain lung disabilities incurred by volunteer firefighters

Maddy summaryThis bill makes permanent a 2006 law that creates a presumption: volunteer firefighters diagnosed with certain lung disabilities (like cancer or respiratory illnesses) are automatically considered to have incurred those conditions during firefighting duties. It directly affects volunteer firefighters in New York who develop these specific lung conditions while serving. The key change removes the previous expiration date (June 30, 2025), ensuring the presumption remains in effect indefinitely. This simplifies the process for eligible firefighters to access benefits by shifting the burden of proof to the state.

Replaces each instance of the word accident with the word crash in relation to vehicle and traffic law

Maddy summaryThis bill replaces every instance of the word "accident" with "crash" throughout New York's Vehicle and Traffic Law. It affects how vehicle incidents are documented in official records, including crash reports, tow truck regulations, and highway safety documentation. The change is purely linguistic - no legal requirements, penalties, or procedures are altered. The bill updates terminology to align with common usage without modifying the law's substance.

Establishes the crimes of harassment of a law enforcement officer or a member of the officer's family in the first degree and second degree

Maddy summaryThis bill creates two new criminal offenses targeting harassment of law enforcement officers and their immediate family members. First-degree harassment (a felony) covers threatening communications (via phone, email, or other means) that cause reasonable fear of physical harm or property damage. Second-degree harassment (a misdemeanor) includes physical contact, following someone in public, or repeated conduct that alarms officers or family members. The law applies to active and retired officers across all levels of law enforcement (state, local, federal) and their household family members, as defined in existing law.
