This measure would make various statements regarding the importance of New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) to the California economy and would declare the necessity for the Legislature to utilize its vested powers to keep NUMMI in California.
This measure requests the United States government to restrict swordfish imports unless and until there is a process by which a nation seeking to export swordfish or swordfish products to the United States provides reasonable proof of the effects on marine mammals of the commercial fishing technology used to obtain the swordfish or swordfish products, and the National Marine Fisheries Service receives that proof and determines that the proof demonstrates that the swordfish or swordfish products to be imported were not caught with commercial fishing technology that results in the incidental kill or incidental serious injury of marine mammals in excess of United States standards.
This measure would designate a specified portion of State Highway Route 15 in Temecula as the Deputy Kent Hintergardt Memorial Highway. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering those costs, to erect those signs.
Existing law, the Cemetery Act, provides for the licensing and regulation of certain private cemeteries by the Cemetery and Funeral Bureau. Existing law requires all cemeteries for which a certificate of authority is required to be supervised by a licensed cemetery manager, and prohibits a person from engaging in the business of, acting as, or advertising as, a cemetery manager without a license from the bureau and without being employed by, or a corporate officer of, a licensed cemetery. This bill would, notwithstanding any other provision of law, authorize a court of competent jurisdiction, based upon the court's finding that a cemetery manager of a private cemetery has ceased to perform his or her duties due to a lapse, suspension, surrender, abandonment, or revocation of his or her license, to appoint a temporary manager to manage the property of, and certain services provided by, the private cemetery, as provided, for a limited term of 6 months or until a new licensed cemetery manager is hired. The bill would permit the court to authorize the payment of reasonable compensation for the temporary manager's services, to be paid by the trustees from available income from the cemetery, as provided. This bill would declare that it is to take effect immediately as an urgency statute.
This measure would urge the Congress of the United States and the federal administration to work with the Governor and the Legislature of the State of California to, among other things, provide federal loan guarantees, flexibility with respect to certain programs, and certain funding levels for vital programs, as specified.
This measure would declare the week of June 29 through July 5, 2009, Yellow Ribbon Week to show support for military families and for troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This measure would acknowledge the history of the Chinese in California, recognize the contributions made to the State of California by Chinese Americans and Chinese immigrants, and express regret for past discriminatory laws and constitutional provisions which resulted in the persecution of Chinese living in California.
This measure would designate the month of September 2009 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in the State of California and would encourage public officials and citizens to observe the month with appropriate activities and programs.
This measure would proclaim the month of May 2009 as Motorcycle Awareness Month.
This measure would designate that January 19, 2009, be observed as the official memorial of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birth, and commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights Movement in changing public policy in California and in the United States of America.
