Loan Equity for Advanced Professionals Act

Maddy summaryThis bill increases federal student loan limits for graduate and professional students. Starting July 1, 2026, it sets a $50,000 annual limit and a $200,000 total aggregate limit (beyond undergraduate borrowing) for unsubsidized Federal Direct Stafford loans. These changes directly affect graduate and professional students pursuing advanced degrees who rely on federal loans for education costs. The provisions aim to provide higher borrowing capacity for these students' educational expenses under the Higher Education Act.

LET’S Protect Workers Act

Maddy summaryHR 6597, the LET’S Protect Workers Act, increases civil penalties for employers violating key labor laws to strengthen worker protections. It raises fines for child labor violations to up to $700,000 per incident causing death or serious injury, and doubles penalties for repeated wage/hour violations (up to $50,000 per violation). The bill also significantly boosts OSHA penalties (e.g., up to $800,000 for serious violations), adds new retaliation penalties for mine safety violations (up to $200,000 for repeat offenses), and clarifies that recordkeeping violations continue until corrected. These changes apply to employers across sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, and mining, under the Fair Labor Standards Act, Occupational Safety and Health Act, and Mine Safety Act.

HELP Copays Act

Maddy summaryHR 6423, the HELP Copays Act, requires health insurance plans and coverage to count financial assistance from non-profits or drug manufacturers toward patient cost-sharing limits like deductibles and copayments. This directly affects patients enrolled in health insurance who receive such assistance for prescription drugs, ensuring the help they get reduces their out-of-pocket costs faster. The bill amends key health laws to mandate that these payments are included when calculating whether a patient has met their deductible or copayment threshold. The change applies to all prescription drugs, including specialty drugs and those subject to prior authorization, but does not alter how insurers manage drug access through tools like step therapy. It takes effect for plan years starting in 2026.

Improving Access to Workers’ Compensation for Injured Federal Workers Act of 2025

Maddy summaryThis bill expands eligibility for workers' compensation medical care under the Federal Employees' Compensation Act by adding nurse practitioners and physician assistants as covered providers. It directly affects injured federal workers who can now receive care from these professionals within their state-authorized scope of practice. Key provisions redefine "other eligible provider" in the law and update related sections to replace "physician" with "physician or other eligible provider" throughout the statute. The bill requires the Secretary of Labor to issue final regulations within six months of enactment to implement these changes.

Condemning the Government of Iran's state-sponsored persecution of the Baha'i minority in Iran and the continued violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Maddy summaryHRES 925 is a non-binding resolution condemning the Iranian government's ongoing persecution of the Baha'i religious minority. It directly affects Baha'is in Iran, who face systemic discrimination, imprisonment, denial of education and employment, and violence due to their faith. The resolution calls on Iran to immediately release Baha'i prisoners, end hate propaganda targeting them, and reverse policies banning their access to education and jobs. It also urges the U.S. President and Secretary of State to demand Iran's compliance and use existing sanctions authorities against officials responsible for human rights abuses against Baha'is.

Rx ACCESS Act

Maddy summaryThe Rx ACCESS Act improves prescription drug access for TRICARE beneficiaries, including military service members, retirees, and their families, by establishing fair reimbursement standards for pharmacies and expanding medication choice. It requires pharmacies to be reimbursed at actual drug costs (or the national average drug cost for certain medications) plus a standard dispensing fee, while banning hidden fees like point-of-sale charges. Starting October 1, 2026, beneficiaries can choose how they receive non-generic medications for ongoing health conditions. The law also mandates annual audits to verify reimbursement fairness and ensure pharmacy networks provide accessible care, especially in rural and underserved areas.

Dismantle Foreign Scam Syndicates Act

Maddy summaryThis bill establishes a new interagency Task Force to dismantle foreign scam operations targeting Americans, particularly through "pig butchering" scams in Southeast Asia. The Task Force, chaired by the Secretary of State, will coordinate efforts across multiple agencies to shut down scam centers, impose sanctions on perpetrators, and support victims of trafficking. It requires a detailed strategy within 180 days and annual reports to Congress on progress, including sanctions imposed and funds recovered. The bill authorizes $30 million for these efforts in fiscal years 2026-2027, focusing on countries like Cambodia, Laos, and Burma where scam centers operate with forced labor.

Migrant Due Process Protection Act

Maddy summaryThe Migrant Due Process Protection Act (HR 6349) would require immigration judges to allow non-citizens in removal proceedings (who are not held in government custody) to request virtual hearings via video or phone. Judges must approve such requests and ensure virtual formats do not disadvantage the individual. This directly affects people facing deportation who are not currently detained by immigration authorities. The bill adds a new procedural option for remote hearings without changing legal standards or outcomes.

No New Burma Funds Act

Maddy summaryThe No New Burma Funds Act (HR 4423) extends the existing pause on World Bank payments and new financial commitments to Burma's government. This pause, initiated after the 2021 military coup that overthrew Burma's democratically elected government, prevents the Burmese government from accessing new international funding. The bill directs the U.S. Treasury Secretary to instruct the U.S. representative at the World Bank to maintain this pause unless they determine it is not in the public interest. The bill directly affects Burma's government by restricting its access to World Bank financial support.

Mikaela Naylon Give Kids a Chance Act

Give Kids a Chance Act of 2025 This bill expands the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) authority with respect to research on rare pediatric diseases, including by permitting the FDA to take enforcement action against drug sponsors that fail to satisfy pediatric study requirements and by reauthorizing programs that support pediatric research.  Specifically, the bill modifies requirements relating to molecularly targeted pediatric cancer investigations to permit research on new drugs in combination with active ingredients that have already been approved, provided certain conditions are met; permits the FDA to take enforcement action against drug sponsors that fail to comply with pediatric study requirements, if such sponsors demonstrated a lack of due diligence in satisfying the requirement; renews the FDA’s authority to award priority review vouchers to sponsors of new products intended to treat rare pediatric diseases through September 30, 2029; and reauthorizes through FY2027 certain funding for the National Institutes of Health to support priority pediatric research.  The bill also provides statutory authority for the FDA’s interpretation of the orphan drug exclusivity period. The bill specifies, consistent with FDA regulations, that the seven-year market exclusivity period for drugs for rare diseases or conditions (i.e., orphan drugs) prohibits the approval of the same drug for the same approved use or indication with respect to the disease or condition. (In Catalyst Pharmaceuticals, Inc. v. Becerra , a court rejected the FDA’s interpretation and held that orphan drug exclusivity extends to all uses or indications for the disease or condition.)
