TRUST in Congress Act

Maddy summaryHR 345, the TRUST in Congress Act, requires Members of Congress, their spouses, and dependent children to place certain investments into a "blind trust" within 90 days of taking office or after the bill's enactment. It directly affects current and future lawmakers and their immediate family members by mandating that covered investments - such as stocks, commodities, or derivatives (excluding Treasury bonds and some mutual funds) - be placed in a trust they cannot manage. Members must certify the trust setup to House or Senate officials within 15 days, and trusts cannot be dissolved until 180 days after leaving office. The law excludes investments providing primary income (e.g., from a spouse's job) but requires transparency through public website disclosures of certifications.

Opportunity To Address College Hunger Act

Maddy summaryThis bill requires colleges to notify students receiving federal work-study aid about their potential eligibility for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). It mandates that institutions send electronic notifications (via email or other digital means) to these students, explaining SNAP eligibility requirements, state-specific application processes, and including a document confirming their work-study status to satisfy SNAP eligibility rules. The bill directly affects undergraduate and graduate students participating in federal work-study programs who may qualify for food assistance but lack awareness of SNAP. The key mechanism is the standardized notification developed by the Education and Agriculture Departments, designed to streamline access to nutrition benefits for students facing food insecurity.

Establishing the Task Force on the Legislative Process.

Maddy summaryThis bill creates a 12-member task force to study ways to speed up Congress’s passage of bills with broad bipartisan support. The task force, composed of six House and six Senate members appointed by party leadership, will analyze options for "bicameral legislation expedition" (meaning expedited consideration of bills passed by the other chamber with wide support) and issue a report within one year. The report must include analysis and recommendations approved by at least nine members, to be posted publicly by the Rules Committees. The bill itself does not change voting rules but establishes a body to study procedural improvements.

Amending title 36, United States Code, to direct the President to issue an annual proclamation establishing Democracy Day.

Maddy summaryH.J.Res. 14 proposes amending the U.S. Code to require the President to issue an annual proclamation designating a day as "Democracy Day." The proclamation would call on state and local governments, educational institutions, and the public to observe the day with programs and activities promoting democratic values. It does not fix a specific date (though the preamble references January 6 as a potential day), leaving the annual designation to the President's discretion. The bill directly affects the President and state/local authorities by establishing a formal mechanism for nationwide civic observance of democracy.
