Gulf of America Act

Maddy summaryHR 276, the Gulf of America Act, would rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in all U.S. federal documents and maps. It requires all federal agencies to update their records, maps, and publications within 180 days of enactment to reflect this new name. The bill directly affects federal agencies responsible for geographic naming and documentation, such as the Department of the Interior and the Board on Geographic Names. This is a procedural change with no impact on policy, environmental regulations, or affected communities.

Providing for congressional disapproval under chapter 8 of title 5, United States Code, of the rule submitted by the Department of Energy relating to "Energy Conservation Program: Energy Conservation Standards for Consumer Gas-fired Instantaneous Water Heaters".

Maddy summaryThis resolution blocks a Department of Energy rule that would have set new energy efficiency standards for gas-fired instant water heaters. It prevents the rule from taking effect, meaning appliance manufacturers would not have to meet the proposed efficiency requirements. The rule, submitted in December 2024, directly affected manufacturers of these water heaters and consumers purchasing them. Congress approved this disapproval through a joint resolution passed on May 9, 2025.

Justice for Victims of Illegal Alien Murders Act

Maddy summaryHR 3294, the "Justice for Victims of Illegal Alien Murders Act," amends federal murder sentencing to mandate the death penalty or life imprisonment for first-degree murder, and life or long-term imprisonment for second-degree murder, committed by non-citizens classified as inadmissible (e.g., due to prior criminal convictions) or deportable under specific immigration laws. The bill directly affects non-citizens who fall under these immigration categories and are convicted of murder in the U.S. It changes sentencing provisions under Title 18, U.S. Code, by adding these mandatory penalties for such offenses. The law focuses solely on modifying criminal penalties for specific convicted non-citizens, not on immigration enforcement or new legal standards. It does not alter immigration status requirements or create new procedures.

Punishing Illegal Immigrant Felons Act of 2025

Maddy summaryThis bill increases mandatory prison sentences for non-citizens convicted of certain crimes after entering the U.S. without authorization or being deported. It raises the minimum sentence from 2 to 5 years for those who improperly enter the U.S. and later commit a crime punishable by over one year in prison. For non-citizens previously deported who commit crimes, it increases the minimum sentence from 2 to 10 years and mandates at least 10 years for offenses including aggravated felonies, state/federal felonies, or crimes punishable by over one year. These changes apply to all non-citizens convicted under these circumstances, regardless of jurisdiction.

1071 Repeal to Protect Small Business Lending Act

Maddy summaryHR 976, the "1071 Repeal to Protect Small Business Lending Act," would repeal data collection and reporting requirements for small business loans under Section 704B of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. This specifically removes the mandate for financial institutions - especially community banks and credit unions - to track and submit loan data by business characteristics like race or gender. The bill aims to reduce compliance costs for lenders, which its findings argue limit small business access to credit. The repeal would eliminate these reporting obligations and remove references to the requirement from related federal laws.

SALUTE Act

Maddy summaryThe SALUTE Act establishes a 5-year pilot program to provide supplemental insurance for military members and their TRICARE-eligible dependents who face uncovered cancer-related costs. It requires the Secretary of Defense to partner with up to two insurance companies to offer fixed indemnity plans that pay direct cash benefits for cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment expenses not covered by standard military health benefits. These plans must operate separately from existing coverage, be available through TRICARE's online portal, and be funded entirely by enrollee premiums with no government subsidies. The program targets active-duty service members (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force) and their TRICARE-enrolled dependents facing out-of-pocket cancer costs.

Protecting the Mailing of Firearms Act

Maddy summaryHR 3033, the "Protecting the Mailing of Firearms Act," repeals a federal law (18 U.S.C. §1715) that previously prohibited mailing firearms and related items. This bill directly affects firearm sellers, buyers, and the U.S. Postal Service by removing the ban on mailing firearms, ammunition, and components. It also prohibits the Postmaster General from creating rules that would block firearm mailings or require disclosure of sales receipts, transaction records, or firearm serial numbers. The law takes effect immediately for pending cases and prevents new restrictions on firearm shipping through the postal system.

Supporting the Second Amendment's guarantee that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, and commending President Trump and his administration as they work to protect Second Amendment freedoms by reviewing and eliminating any of the Biden administration's infringements on American's constitutional freedoms.

Maddy summaryHRES 339 is a non-binding House resolution supporting the Second Amendment and criticizing the Biden administration's firearm-related policies. It does not create new laws or directly affect anyone; instead, it formally disapproves of specific Biden-era actions by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) that the resolution claims restricted constitutional rights. Key provisions include condemning ATF rules limiting firearm access, BIS policies restricting firearm exports, and the Biden administration's "gun control agenda," while commending former President Trump for seeking to reverse these policies. The resolution reaffirms the constitutional right to bear arms but has no legal effect, as it is a symbolic statement of legislative opinion.

SAVE Act

Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act or the SAVE Act This bill requires individuals to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. Specifically, the bill prohibits states from accepting and processing an application to register to vote in a federal election unless the applicant presents documentary proof of U.S. citizenship. The bill specifies what documents are considered acceptable proof of U.S. citizenship, such as identification that complies with the REAL ID Act of 2005 that indicates U.S. citizenship. Further, the bill (1) prohibits states from registering an individual to vote in a federal election unless, at the time the individual applies to register to vote, the individual provides documentary proof of U.S. citizenship; and (2) requires states to establish an alternative process under which an applicant may submit other evidence to demonstrate U.S. citizenship. Each state must take affirmative steps on an ongoing basis to ensure that only U.S. citizens are registered to vote, which shall include establishing a program to identify individuals who are not U.S. citizens using information supplied by certain sources. Additionally, states must remove noncitizens from their official lists of eligible voters. The bill allows for a private right of action against an election official who registers an applicant to vote in a federal election who fails to present documentary proof of U.S. citizenship. The bill establishes criminal penalties for certain offenses, including registering an applicant to vote in a federal election who fails to present documentary proof of U.S. citizenship.

Infrastructure Project Acceleration Act

Maddy summaryHR 2783, the Infrastructure Project Acceleration Act, fast-tracks large-scale manufacturing projects in the U.S. by waiving certain federal environmental reviews. It applies to projects costing $1 billion or more that require federal approvals, directly affecting major manufacturers seeking to build or expand facilities. Key provisions exclude projects from needing permits under the Clean Water Act (Section 404) and the Endangered Species Act (Sections 7, 9, 10), modify National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) reviews to accept equivalent state/Tribal environmental processes, and limit court challenges by barring judicial review of approvals for these projects. The bill aims to speed up manufacturing projects in critical sectors like defense and healthcare while reducing reliance on foreign manufacturing.
