Relates to site mapping for emergency response data and school safety plans

Maddy summaryThis bill requires school districts to create detailed site maps for emergency response as part of school safety plans. The maps must include floor plans, school grounds layouts, road maps of surrounding areas, and specific labels like hazardous materials locations, with features like true north orientation, grid coordinates, and compatibility with existing law enforcement software. Districts must verify map accuracy through initial and annual building walkthroughs. The bill also establishes funding eligibility through school building aid for approved mapping costs, ensuring schools don't need to purchase new software to share these maps with emergency responders.

Relates to paid family leave and bereavement for fetal death, still birth, and an infant being medically not viable to survive

Maddy summaryThis bill expands New York's paid family leave program to include bereavement leave for employees experiencing fetal death, stillbirth, or an infant declared medically not viable to survive. It amends workers' compensation law to explicitly add these circumstances as qualifying reasons for leave under the "bereavement" provision, requiring employees to provide a fetal death certificate, stillbirth certificate, or death certificate as proof. The policy applies to all eligible employees covered under the state's paid family leave system, effective January 1, 2025. It does not create new benefits but extends existing leave protections to these specific pregnancy-related losses.

Permits public schools to utilize or display indigenous names

Maddy summaryThis bill allows public schools to use Indigenous names for extracurricular activities, such as sports teams, by requiring the education commissioner to create new regulations permitting this practice. It defines "indigenous names" as references to Indigenous cultures, tribes, or traditions, while clarifying that schools may display related symbols only in classroom instruction (not for team branding). The bill removes current restrictions on using Indigenous names but does not mandate schools to adopt them or permit all visual representations like logos or mascots.

Requires hate crime awareness curriculum or instruction for school districts

Maddy summaryThis bill requires New York school districts to implement age-appropriate hate crime awareness curriculum. It directs the education commissioner, with input from the Division of Human Rights, to develop content covering discrimination, religious intolerance (including anti-Semitism and Islamophobia), and positive actions for inclusion. Schools may integrate this into existing social studies or other curricula, without requiring statewide uniformity. The law takes effect July 1, 2025, after enactment.
