Maddy summaryThis bill modifies the rules for succession rights in rent-stabilized apartments, allowing a family member to take over a lease after the original tenant moves out permanently. Currently, a family member must have lived in the unit for two years to qualify, but this legislation reduces that requirement to just one year. The change applies to all family members and includes special provisions for senior citizens and disabled individuals, who also only need one year of residency. Additionally, the bill clarifies that temporary absences for reasons like military service, education, or medical treatment do not break the required residency period.
