Authorizes the Halesite Fire District to file an application for exemption from real property taxes

Maddy summaryThis bill allows the Halesite Fire District to request an exemption from real property taxes for a specific parcel of land it owns in Huntington. If the town assessor approves the application, the district would not have to pay taxes on that property for the 2022-2023 tax year. Additionally, the bill authorizes officials to refund any taxes, fines, or penalties the district already paid for this land and to remove any related liens. The measure takes effect immediately and applies only to the single tax roll in question.

Establishes a real property tax exemption for widows and widowers of police officers killed in the line of duty

Maddy summaryThis bill creates a real property tax exemption for the primary residences of widows and widowers of police officers who were killed in the line of duty. Under the new law, eligible individuals can receive a fifty percent reduction on their property taxes, though local governments or school districts retain the authority to lower this percentage if they choose. The legislation clarifies eligibility rules for various housing types, including cooperative apartments, and establishes a standardized list of documents to prove a deceased officer's status. Local assessors will use this guidance to determine which properties qualify for the tax break starting the January following the bill's enactment.
