Vet Center Support Act

Vet Center Support Act This bill requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to report on its provision of mental health care to veterans in covered states. A covered state is each state (including Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, and any territory or possession of the United States) that has a ratio of one or fewer Vet Centers per 100,000 or more veterans residing in the state or territory. Vet Centers are community-based counseling centers that provide social and psychological services to eligible veterans, active duty service members, and their families. The VA must also report on the marketing and outreach funding of Vet Centers in covered states.

A resolution supporting the right of parents to be the leading voice in the education of their children.

Maddy summaryThis non-binding Senate resolution supports parents' primary role in decisions about their children's education. It specifically opposes a Justice Department memo (issued October 4, 2021) directing federal resources to investigate parents protesting school policies, and demands that memo be rescinded. The resolution condemns efforts to restrict parental involvement in school decisions, such as limiting access to school meetings or curricula. It was introduced in response to controversies involving school board meetings in Loudoun County, Virginia, and a National School Boards Association letter comparing parent protests to domestic terrorism.

A resolution expressing support for the designation of October 28, 2021, as "Honoring the Nation's First Responders Day".

Maddy summaryThis symbolic Senate resolution supports designating October 28, 2021, as "Honoring the Nation's First Responders Day." It recognizes first responders - including firefighters, police, EMTs, and emergency medical workers - and encourages Americans to observe the day with ceremonies highlighting their contributions to public safety. The resolution has no legal effect but formally expresses the Senate's support for honoring these workers. It directly affects public awareness of first responders' roles, not policy or funding.

A resolution recognizing the importance of protecting freedom of speech, thought, and expression at institutions of higher education.

This resolution addresses free speech issues at institutions of higher education (IHEs). Specifically, the resolution recognizes that free speech zones and restrictive speech codes of IHEs are inherently at odds with the freedom of speech guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution. In addition, the resolution urges (1) IHEs to facilitate and recommit themselves to protecting the free and open exchange of ideas; (2) the Department of Education to promote policies that foster debate, academic freedom, intellectual curiosity, and viewpoint diversity on campuses of public IHEs; and (3) the Department of Justice to defend and protect the First Amendment across public IHEs.
