Health Coverage Tax Credit Reauthorization Act of 2026

Maddy summaryThis bill extends the Health Coverage Tax Credit program through January 1, 2030, allowing eligible individuals and small businesses to receive tax credits for purchasing health insurance. The program directly affects people who buy health insurance outside of government marketplaces and small businesses that provide coverage to their employees. Under this legislation, qualified taxpayers can claim a tax credit to help pay for their monthly health insurance premiums, with the credit amount based on their income and the cost of coverage. The change is administrative, simply updating the expiration date in the tax code rather than altering how the credit is calculated or who qualifies for it.

Moral Injury Recognition and Restitution Act

Maddy summaryThis bill, known as the Moral Injury Recognition and Restitution Act, changes how the Department of Veterans Affairs handles compensation claims for veterans affected by military sexual trauma. It allows veterans who receive approved claims for mental health conditions or physical injuries caused by such trauma to receive back pay starting from the day after their military discharge rather than from the date their claim was filed. The legislation defines military sexual trauma according to existing legal standards and includes both mental health conditions and physical disabilities resulting from or worsened by the trauma. This change applies retroactively to eligible veterans who have already been approved for compensation benefits.

Social Security Customer Service Act

Maddy summaryThis bill requires the Social Security Administration to hire enough full-time employees to match the workforce level as of January 19, 2025, within six months of enactment. At least 75 percent of these new hires must fill direct service roles such as field offices, call centers, payment processing, and disability claim adjudication, while the remaining 25 percent will provide managerial or administrative support. The law directly affects Social Security beneficiaries by aiming to increase the number of staff available to handle their inquiries and benefit claims. This measure seeks to restore staffing levels to a specific historical benchmark to improve customer service capacity.

Hold ICE Accountable Act of 2026

Maddy summaryThis bill creates a special prosecutor to investigate alleged unlawful actions by Department of Homeland Security officials that occurred on or after January 20, 2025. The special prosecutor would be appointed by a three-judge panel from outside the federal government and would have full authority to investigate and prosecute federal crimes, including obstruction of justice and witness intimidation. The bill also establishes protections for the special prosecutor and their staff, limits the Attorney General's ability to remove them without cause, and allows individuals whose rights were allegedly violated to sue for damages without relying on qualified immunity defenses.

Recognizing the significance of equal pay and the disparity between wages paid to men and women.

Maddy summaryThis concurrent resolution formally recognizes the ongoing disparity between wages paid to men and women in the United States and reaffirms Congress's commitment to supporting equal pay. It highlights statistical data showing that women earn approximately 81 cents for every dollar earned by men, with significant variations across racial and ethnic groups, and notes that the gender wage gap has widened over the past two years. The document also identifies contributing factors such as occupational segregation, lack of family-friendly workplace policies, and workplace harassment, while emphasizing the economic impact on women's retirement security and family incomes.

Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act of 2026

Maddy summaryThis bill establishes new safety and medical requirements for "unified boxing organizations" (UBOs), which are boxing groups that manage title belts and rankings without separate sanctioning bodies. It directly affects UBOs and boxers under their contracts by mandating comprehensive medical screenings (including annual physicals, brain MRIs, and pregnancy tests for female boxers), requiring two ambulances and three physicians at ringside during matches, and providing boxers with mandatory health insurance covering $25,000 in injury costs. Key provisions include strict anti-doping testing protocols (with no cost to boxers), prohibitions on boxers betting on matches, and UBOs covering all medical expenses. The bill also requires UBOs to register publicly with the Federal Trade Commission and adhere to updated industry standards for boxer compensation and safety.

Extending WIC for New Moms Act This bill amends the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to extend the eligibility periods for breastfeeding and postpartum women. Specifically, a state program may elect to certify a breastfeeding woman for up to 24 months (currently 1 year) postpartum. The bill also expands the eligibility period for postpartum women to up to 24 months after termination of pregnancy (currently 6 months). Advanced Wastewater Treatment Assistance Act of 2026

Maddy summaryThis bill establishes a federal grant program to help states fund advanced wastewater treatment projects, with $1 billion authorized for fiscal years 2026 through 2030. The Environmental Protection Agency will distribute funds based on a formula, requiring states to contribute at least 50 percent of project costs unless the project serves disadvantaged communities, which are exempt from this requirement. At least 49 percent of the funding must go to projects serving disadvantaged communities, rural or tribal facilities, or regional water providers that benefit multiple disadvantaged areas. The legislation also requires the EPA to conduct a study with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to evaluate how well advanced wastewater treatment technologies remove emerging contaminants like nanomaterials and certain chemicals.
