Children Don't Belong on Tobacco Farms Act

Maddy summaryThis bill amends the Fair Labor Standards Act to prohibit children under 18 from having direct contact with tobacco plants or dried tobacco leaves on farms. It directly affects minors who might work on tobacco farms and tobacco farm employers who currently allow such employment. The key change adds tobacco farming to the list of occupations where children under 18 cannot work, closing a loophole that previously permitted this activity. This update explicitly excludes tobacco-related agriculture from exceptions allowing minors in certain farm jobs under federal law.

Therapeutic Fraud Prevention Act of 2025

Maddy summaryHR 3243, the Therapeutic Fraud Prevention Act of 2025, bans the provision of paid conversion therapy aimed at changing a person's sexual orientation or gender identity, and prohibits advertising such therapy as effective, safe, or without risk. It directly affects LGBTQ+ individuals and their families who might be targeted by these practices, as professionals have determined conversion therapy is ineffective and harmful. The law treats violations as deceptive acts under consumer protection laws, empowering the Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general to enforce it through civil actions. It explicitly excludes legitimate gender transition support and non-discriminatory counseling from the ban.

Reproductive Data Privacy and Protection Act

Maddy summaryHR 3218, the Reproductive Data Privacy and Protection Act, requires law enforcement and government agencies to swear under oath that they will not use reproductive or sexual health information in investigations or legal proceedings. It amends federal wiretap laws (18 U.S.C. § 2518) and communication disclosure rules (18 U.S.C. § 2703) to mandate this protection. The bill defines "reproductive or sexual health information" broadly to include details about abortion, contraception, IVF, pregnancy, sexual health conditions, and related medical services. This directly affects law enforcement, courts, and service providers by legally restricting how sensitive health data can be used in investigations. The law aims to prevent government use of such data to target individuals seeking or providing reproductive care.

Assault Weapons Ban of 2025 This bill makes it a crime to knowingly import, sell, manufacture, transfer, or possess a semiautomatic assault weapon (SAW) or large capacity ammunition feeding device (LCAFD). The prohibition does not apply to a firearm that is (1) manually operated by bolt, pump, lever, or slide action, except for certain shotguns; (2) permanently inoperable; (3) an antique; (4) only capable of firing rimfire ammunition; or (5) a rifle or shotgun specifically identified by make and model. The bill permits continued possession of, but prohibits sale or transfer of, a grandfathered LCAFD. Newly manufactured LCAFDs must display serial number identification. Newly manufactured SAWs and LCAFDs must display the date of manufacture.
