Maddy summarySB 2152 proposes a constitutional amendment to raise Hawaii's mandatory retirement age for state judges and justices from 70 to 75 years. This change would directly affect current and future state court judges, allowing them to serve until age 75 instead of retiring at 70. REQUESTING THE PLANNING OR PLANNING AND PERMITTING DEPARTMENT OF EACH COUNTY TO ESTABLISH KUPUNA-FRIENDLY BUILDING PERMIT REQUIREMENTS FOR PARKING ACCESSIBILITY AND PRIVATE BUSINESSES OPERATING HOURS.

Maddy summaryThis bill requests that each county's planning department create building permit requirements to improve parking accessibility and adjust business hours for older adults, known as kupuna in Hawaii. The key provisions would require private businesses and shopping centers to offer special entry hours for kupuna and increase the minimum number of parking spaces designated for both disabled and non-disabled older adults. As a concurrent resolution, this measure does not create enforceable laws but instead asks county officials to consider these changes when updating local building codes. The bill aims to help the aging population access community services and participate more fully in daily life by addressing parking availability and business operating hours.
