Maddy summaryEthan's Law requires gun owners to store firearms securely in homes where minors live or where residents are legally prohibited from owning guns. It makes it unlawful to leave firearms unsecured if a minor or ineligible person could access them, with fines of $500 per violation and harsher penalties if injury or death occurs. The bill creates a federal grant program to help states implement similar secure storage laws and treats unsafe storage as negligence in legal cases. It directly affects households with children or residents who cannot legally possess firearms, aiming to reduce accidental shootings and unauthorized access.

Maddy summaryThe Conrad State 30 and Physician Access Reauthorization Act extends and reauthorizes a program that allows foreign medical graduates to work in underserved U.S. communities after completing their training. It extends the program through 2021 (with retroactive effect), adds protections for physicians who have completed service requirements, and makes changes to visa requirements to better support physicians working in underserved areas. The bill requires states to maintain a 90% utilization rate of waivers to keep receiving the full allocation, and adds reporting requirements for the program. This bill directly affects foreign physicians seeking to work in underserved areas and the health care facilities that employ them.
Maddy summaryHR 585, the Supporting Veteran Families in Need Act, amends Section 2044(e) of Title 38, U.S. Code, to establish permanent funding authority for financial assistance to very low-income veteran families living in permanent housing. It adds a new provision (paragraph (9)) ensuring that funding for these supportive services continues automatically for fiscal year 2027 and all subsequent years, without requiring annual congressional appropriations. This change directly affects eligible veteran families by securing ongoing access to financial aid for housing-related support. The bill does not create new benefits but ensures the continuation of existing assistance programs through a permanent funding mechanism.
Maddy summaryHR 1548, the "Leveling the Playing Field 2.0 Act," amends U.S. trade laws to strengthen enforcement of antidumping and countervailing duty regulations. The bill creates new rules for handling multiple investigations on the same merchandise (successive investigations), addresses market distortions in foreign countries that affect production costs, and improves mechanisms to prevent companies from circumventing existing duties. It also establishes procedures for investigating currency undervaluation as a form of subsidy and strengthens requirements for importers to certify compliance with trade laws. These changes primarily affect U.S. importers of foreign goods, foreign exporters, and the Department of Commerce, which administers these trade enforcement mechanisms.
Pay Our Coast Guard Parity Act of 2025 This bill provides continuing appropriations to the Coast Guard for pay and benefits when there is a Coast Guard-specific funding lapse. Under the bill, a Coast Guard-specific funding lapse occurs when (1) a bill providing appropriations for the Coast Guard for a fiscal year has not been enacted before the beginning of that fiscal year, and no joint resolution providing continuing appropriations for the Coast Guard is in effect; and (2) a bill providing appropriations for the Department of Defense (DOD) for the fiscal year has been enacted before the beginning of the fiscal year, or a joint resolution providing continuing appropriation for DOD is in effect. If a Coast Guard-specific funding lapse occurs, the bill provides appropriations to the Coast Guard for pay and allowances for military members of the Coast Guard who perform active service or inactive-duty training; pay and benefits for certain civilian employees and contract employees; the payment of a death gratuity; payments for travel related to funerals, the dignified transfer of remains, and unit memorial services; and the temporary continuation of the basic allowance for housing for dependents of members of the Coast Guard dying on active duty. The bill generally provides the appropriations to the Coast Guard until the earlier of the enactment of specified Coast Guard appropriations legislation, the termination of the availability of appropriations for DOD, or two weeks after the beginning of the Coast Guard-specific funding lapse.
Maddy summaryThis bill would require states to create a simplified process for out-of-state healthcare providers to join Medicaid and CHIP programs. Qualified providers (those already enrolled in Medicare or another state's program with low fraud risk) could enroll without excessive screening and would be approved for five years. It directly affects children under 21 enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP by expanding access to providers outside their state, particularly in underserved areas. The change applies to all states' Medicaid programs but takes effect three years after enactment.
Maddy summaryThis bill establishes a Veterans Affairs grant program to fund peer-to-peer mental health support for veterans. It provides up to $250,000 per grant to eligible organizations (like veteran nonprofits, service groups, or state agencies) to hire veterans as peer specialists who host nonclinical support groups and offer 24/7 mental health assistance. The program prohibits grant recipients from collecting or reporting veterans' personal information. It directly affects veterans seeking accessible, nonclinical mental health support through peer-led services.
Maddy summaryHR 1421, the "Make American Flags in America Act of 2025," requires all flags of the United States displayed on federal property or procured by federal agencies to be 100% manufactured in the United States. This directly affects federal agencies (including executive departments, military branches, and legislative/judicial offices) by banning the use of foreign-made flags for official displays or purchases. The bill sets a 90-day deadline for procurement changes and a two-year timeline for display requirements, while excluding private entities from these rules. It also mandates a Federal Trade Commission study on enforcing country-of-origin labeling for flags, with a report due within one year of enactment.
Maddy summaryThe PURE Water Act (HR 1441) creates a federal tax credit for individuals who install qualifying home water filtration systems. It allows a 20% credit on primary residence filtration costs and 10% on secondary residence costs, capped at $2,500 per tax year, with unused portions carryable forward. The credit applies only to systems that remove at least 90% of lead, PFAS, and PFOA from drinking water, excluding maintenance costs. This directly affects individual taxpayers who purchase qualifying filters for their U.S. homes, effective for tax years beginning after December 31, 2024.
Maddy summaryHR 1410 expands access to mental health care for 9/11 responders and survivors by allowing licensed mental health providers (not just physicians) to conduct initial health evaluations and certifications under the World Trade Center Health Program. It adjusts the program’s funding formula to account for changing enrollment numbers by linking annual funding to the previous year’s enrollment ratio, and clarifies that deceased individuals are excluded from enrollment counts. The bill also extends the timeframe for adding new health conditions to the program’s list and requires a 2028 report assessing long-term funding needs through 2090. These changes aim to streamline eligibility, improve care access, and ensure sustainable funding for the program.
