Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training: police canines.
What changed between versions
The deadline for POST to study and issue recommendations on canine use was extended from July 1, 2027 to July 1, 2028, giving the commission an additional year.
Section 13671 was removed in its entirety. This section had required every law enforcement agency with a canine unit to maintain a written canine use policy that complied with POST standards by January 1, 2027. Its removal means the bill no longer directly mandates local agencies to adopt such policies.
The bill title and digest were narrowed to focus solely on POST rather than also referencing law enforcement generally, reflecting the removal of the direct local agency requirement.
The state-mandated local program designation was changed from 'yes' to 'no,' and the reimbursement section (SEC. 2) referencing the Commission on State Mandates was removed, consistent with eliminating the cost-imposing mandate on local agencies.
