SB 1259 California Senate · 2021-2022 Regular Session

Pharmacists: furnishing opioid antagonists.

Summary
The Pharmacy Law establishes the California State Board of Pharmacy to license and regulate pharmacists. Existing law authorizes a pharmacist to furnish naloxone hydrochloride in accordance with standardized procedures and protocols developed and approved by the board and the Medical Board of California, subject to completion by the pharmacist of specified continuing education on the use of naloxone hydrochloride. This bill would instead authorize a pharmacist to furnish an opioid antagonist approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration, subject to completion of continuing education on the use of opioid antagonists.
