Statute of limitation: ransomware.
Summary
Existing law defines the crime of extortion as the obtaining of property or other consideration from a person by means of a wrongful use of force or fear. Under existing law, a person who introduces ransomware into a computer with the intent to extort property or other consideration from another person is punishable in the same manner as if the property or other consideration were actually obtained by means of the ransomware. Existing law requires prosecution for this offense to be commenced within 3 years after the commission of the offense. This bill would require prosecution for that offense to commence within 3 years after the person is initially identified by law enforcement as a suspect in the commission of that offense, as specified.
