Victim compensation: funeral and burial costs.

Existing law authorizes the compensation of victims and derivative victims of specified types of crimes by the California Victim Compensation Board from the Restitution Fund, a continuously appropriated fund, for specified losses suffered as a result of those crimes. Existing law sets forth eligibility requirements for reimbursement, including authorizing the board to deny an application, in whole or in part, if the board finds that denial is appropriate because of the nature of the victim's or other applicant's involvement in the events leading to the crime. This bill would prohibit the board from taking into consideration the victim's or other applicant's involvement in the events leading to the crime when determining eligibility to receive funeral or burial costs. By authorizing payment for these costs to a new group of people, this bill would make an appropriation.
