MINOR
This bill was amended to add a new section establishing diamondback terrapin protection areas in the Chesapeake Bay. The primary change requires bycatch reduction devices on recreational crab pots only when they are placed within these newly designated protection areas, rather than on all recreational pots statewide. Additionally, the bill mandates that the Marine Resources Commission establish these specific zones and report on further bycatch reduction strategies by December 1, 2027.
Scope change
The bill's scope expanded from a statewide mandate on recreational crab pots to a targeted approach affecting only pots located within specific diamondback terrapin protection areas established in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
REQUIREMENT
Added a new section (28.2-208.4) directing the Marine Resources Commission to create diamondback terrapin protection areas in the Chesapeake Bay.
Modified the requirement for bycatch reduction devices to apply only to recreational crab pots placed within the newly established protection areas, removing the previous statewide mandate for all recreational pots.
TIMELINE
Added a deadline of December 1, 2027, for the Commission to establish protection areas and report on additional bycatch reduction strategies.
