GUARD Act

The GUARD Act (HR 5466) authorizes the Department of Defense to establish National Security and Defense Artificial Intelligence Institutes at eligible U.S. institutions, primarily senior military colleges. These Institutes would focus on advancing artificial intelligence research for national security through partnerships with government agencies, universities, and industry. The bill provides competitive funding for up to 10 years to support specific activities, including creating secure data sets for AI training, developing AI testbeds, and workforce development in AI fields. All Institutes must be based in the United States and prioritize translating research into practical defense applications.
