S 636 United States Senate · 118th Congress

Dolores River National Conservation Area and Special Management Area Act

This bill establishes the Dolores River National Conservation Area (approximately 52,872 acres) and Dolores River Special Management Area (approximately 15,452 acres) in Colorado to protect natural, cultural, recreational, and ecological resources including native fish and whitewater boating opportunities. It creates a 14-member advisory council with diverse representation from local governments, water users, conservation groups, recreation interests, and tribal representatives to assist in management planning. The legislation prohibits new road construction and motorized vehicle use in sensitive areas like Ponderosa Gorge, requires management plans within three years for both areas, and releases certain river segments from potential Wild and Scenic River designation. It specifically protects existing water rights related to the Dolores Project and ensures tribal treaty rights remain unaffected by the conservation designations.
