Advancing Research in Nuclear Fuel Recycling Act of 2024

S 5157, the Advancing Research in Nuclear Fuel Recycling Act of 2024, directs the U.S. Department of Energy to commission a study on recycling spent nuclear fuel. The study, to be conducted by an independent committee via the National Academies within 90 days of enactment, will examine the feasibility, costs, risks (including proliferation), and benefits of recycling spent nuclear fuel for use in reactors, medical applications, and other commercial purposes. It will compare recycling with current storage methods, analyze different recycling technologies, assess impacts on communities storing nuclear waste, and evaluate regulatory definitions and policy needs. The resulting report, due within 12 months, will inform future policy decisions about nuclear waste management but does not fund or implement recycling programs.
