S 4969 United States Senate · 118th Congress

Wildfire Insurance Coverage Study Act of 2024

This bill directs the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to study wildfire insurance coverage challenges in the U.S. It requires the GAO to analyze wildfire risk trends, current insurance rates and policy exclusions (especially for homeowners and businesses), state regulatory responses, and barriers to insurers underwriting wildfire risk. The study will assess how these factors affect affordability, availability of coverage, and impacts on low-income communities and minority populations. The findings, due to Congress within 24 months, will inform potential policy solutions but do not create new insurance requirements or benefits.
