Local School Foods Expansion Act of 2023

This bill expands a federal program to help schools buy locally grown, unprocessed fruits and vegetables. It requires states participating in the program to demonstrate support for small, local, and socially disadvantaged farmers, Tribal producers, and schools serving many children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The program includes mandatory annual funding of $15 million (2024-2028), with $10 million reserved for administrative costs and technical assistance to help states and farmers participate. The Secretary must evaluate the program’s impact on costs, school meal benefits, and barriers for farmers within two years, reporting findings to Congress four years after enactment.
