HR 8837 United States House · 118th Congress

Celestial Time Standardization Act

This bill directs NASA to develop a new time standard specifically for lunar and space operations, replacing Earth-based Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) which faces challenges in space due to physics. NASA must create a "coordinated lunar time" strategy that links to Earth time, works without constant Earth contact, and supports navigation and science for Moon missions. The strategy requires input from federal agencies, private companies, academic experts, and international partners. NASA must report its final plan to Congress within two years.
