SENIOR Act of 2024

The SENIOR Act of 2024 establishes a new Senior Care Cost Reduction Program to help low-income seniors aged 70+ afford assisted living instead of expensive nursing homes. It provides states with federal funds to offer a monthly subsidy of $1,000 (adjusted annually for inflation) to eligible seniors who meet Medicaid eligibility or chronic illness criteria and have limited income/assets ($19,000 single/$25,000 married). The bill also creates workforce programs to expand training for direct care workers in assisted living facilities, addressing a critical shortage in the senior care industry. By shifting seniors to cost-effective assisted living - which costs half as much as nursing homes - the bill aims to reduce federal and state Medicaid spending on long-term care.
