Fair Social Security for Domestic Violence Survivors Act

This bill changes Social Security rules to better support survivors of domestic violence. It shortens the required marriage duration for divorced individuals to qualify for spousal benefits from 10 years to 5 years, if they provide a court finding of domestic violence committed by their spouse during the marriage. The law applies to both divorced women (under Section 216(d)) and divorced men (under Sections 202(b) and 202(c)), using the Violence Against Women Act's definition of domestic violence. These changes take effect 18 months after the bill is signed into law.
