Ensuring Safe and Ethical AI Development Through SAFE AI Research Grants

This bill establishes a federal grant program administered by the National Academy of Sciences to fund research on safe and ethical artificial intelligence development. It directs the Academy to create public guiding principles for AI safety through consultation with industry, government, academia, and stakeholders, before launching the grants. The program targets researchers and institutions developing AI systems that prioritize security, reliability, and alignment with human values. Within one year of enactment, the Academy must submit a detailed proposal to Congress outlining the grant structure, budget, research priorities, and evaluation methods for funded projects.
