Securing our Elections Act of 2023

HR 154, the Securing our Elections Act of 2023, requires voters in federal elections to present a valid photo ID (such as a driver's license, passport, or state ID) to cast a ballot in person or submit mail-in ballots. Voters without ID may cast a provisional ballot if they provide ID within 3 days or submit a religious exemption affidavit. States must provide free photo IDs to eligible voters who cannot afford them and ensure public access to digital imaging devices for copying IDs at no cost. The law applies to all federal elections starting in 2024 and preempts states with existing photo ID requirements that meet its standards.
