HR 10031 United States House · 118th Congress

Performance Life Disclosure Act of 2024

The Performance Life Disclosure Act of 2024 requires manufacturers to label new household appliances sold at retail with two key estimates: the expected performance life under normal use with routine maintenance and without it, plus the annual cost of recommended maintenance. This applies only to appliances listed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which must publish the list within one year of the bill’s enactment. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will enforce these labeling rules as part of its authority over deceptive practices, and consumers can report when appliances reach end-of-life via a public NIST system. The law directly affects appliance manufacturers and aims to give consumers clearer, standardized information about long-term ownership costs.
