Relating to the period within which the Texas Juvenile Justice Department must accept custody of a person committed to the department and to the consequences for the failure of the department to accept custody of the person within that period.

This bill establishes a 30-day deadline for the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) to accept custody of juveniles committed by a judge. If TJJD fails to accept custody within that period, it must reimburse counties for detention costs at the department’s standard rate for each day the juvenile remains in county facilities. The bill also requires TJJD to give credit toward a juvenile’s required stay for time spent in county detention before transfer, starting on the 31st day after commitment. It takes effect January 1, 2026.
