Relating to the positions designated as exempt from sheriff's department civil service systems in certain counties.

HB 594 amends Texas law to allow sheriffs in specific counties to exempt more positions from civil service hiring rules. Sheriffs in counties with 2 million or fewer residents may exempt up to 10 positions (including chief deputy, four major deputies, and legal counsel roles), while sheriffs in counties with 2-3.3 million residents may exempt up to 18 positions under similar provisions. The bill specifies which roles count toward these limits but does not change the hiring process for exempt positions. It takes effect September 1, 2025.
