Drugs, Prescription - As enacted, encourages a person authorized to dispense prescription drugs, after a request to fill or renew a prescription drug and prior to the point of sale, to make reasonable efforts to notify the person for whom the prescription drug is being filled of the lowest available cost of the drug, including a generic alternative, under a prescription discount or rebate plan, program, or card, or through a different manufacturer, compounder, or supplier, that is available to the person. - Amends TCA Title 47, Chapter 18; Title 56; Title 63 and Title 71.
This bill requires pharmacies in Tennessee to inform patients about the lowest available cost for their prescription drugs before completing a sale. When a customer requests to fill or renew a prescription, pharmacists must make reasonable efforts to notify them of cheaper options, such as generic versions or discounts available through various programs and suppliers. The law applies to all authorized dispensers of prescription drugs and aims to increase transparency regarding pricing alternatives. By mandating this notification process, the legislation ensures patients are aware of potential cost savings before they finalize their purchase.
