HB 2475 Tennessee House · 113th Regular Session (2023-2024)

Courts, Juvenile - As enacted, clarifies, with regard to a teen court having the authority to conduct proceedings and to receive evidence and hear testimony related to the dispositional stage, that such authority includes the authority to request detailed documentation signed by a licensed physician regarding absenteeism in truancy matters. - Amends TCA Title 37 and Title 49.

This bill clarifies the powers of teen courts in Tennessee regarding truancy cases involving minors. It allows these courts to ask parents or guardians to provide specific medical documentation from licensed physicians if they believe it is needed to understand the root causes of a child's absenteeism. The law aims to help courts create better plans for students by ensuring they have access to detailed information about health-related barriers to attendance. By amending state codes, the legislation formalizes the process for requesting such medical records during the stage where consequences for truancy are decided.
