Traffic Safety - As enacted, authorizes a county or municipality to hire employees or appoint volunteers to direct traffic within a school zone if certain conditions are met; establishes a Class C misdemeanor for a motor vehicle operator who knowingly ignores a regulatory or warning sign for the dropping off or picking up of students. - Amends TCA Title 39; Title 54 and Title 55.

This bill allows Tennessee counties and municipalities to hire staff or appoint volunteers to direct traffic or temporarily close lanes within marked school zones during student drop-off and pick-up times. To implement these measures, local governments must install advance signage at least 500 feet before the zone and ensure all signs meet standard traffic control guidelines, while excluding interstate and federally designated highways from these restrictions. Drivers who knowingly ignore these regulatory signs commit a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a $50 fine. The law takes effect on July 1, 2024.
