Authorizes the New York city council to remove the mayor from office
Bill A 8186 proposes to amend the New York City charter to allow the New York City Council to remove the mayor from office. Currently, only the governor has this authority. This bill introduces a new mechanism where the council could remove the mayor by an affirmative vote of three-quarters of all its members. This action would occur after charges are served to the mayor, who would be given an opportunity to present a defense. The council would also be able to temporarily suspend the mayor for up to 30 days during this process by a similar three-quarters vote.
