A 1953 New York Assembly · 2025 Regular Session

Restricts the locations of gunsmiths and dealers in firearms in relation to day cares, educational facilities, and places of worship

This bill (A 1953) restricts where gunsmiths and firearms dealers can operate by prohibiting licenses within 500 feet of child day cares, schools, or places of worship (measured from the center of the nearest entrance). It also limits new licenses in densely populated areas (20,000+ population) if three or more existing gun shops are within 500 feet, unless a community hearing determines it serves the public interest. Exceptions apply to businesses operating continuously before nearby facilities opened, and places of worship retain their status even with incidental community activities like blood drives. The law takes effect November 1, 2025.
