S 9576 New York Senate · 2023 Regular Session

Establishes registered medical assistants

This bill creates a new legal category for registered medical assistants in New York State, allowing individuals who complete an approved education program to use the protected title "M.A.-R." To become registered, applicants must be at least 18 years old, demonstrate good moral character, pay a fee, and finish an accredited training course. Once registered, these professionals can perform basic administrative duties like billing and filing, as well as advanced clinical tasks such as administering vaccines, provided they are assigned by and supervised by a licensed health care practitioner. The law also establishes a three-year registration renewal process with continuing education requirements and clarifies that this new role does not change the existing scope of practice for other medical professionals.
