S 5635 New York Senate · 2023 Regular Session

Authorizes pharmacists to administer injections for contraceptive use

This bill authorizes licensed pharmacists in the state to administer FDA-approved reversible progestin-only contraceptive injections and dispense self-administered hormonal contraceptives. To qualify, pharmacists must complete specific training and follow a process that includes providing patients with risk assessment questionnaires and educational fact sheets before administering or dispensing the medication. The law requires pharmacists to notify a patient's primary healthcare provider within 72 hours of the service, unless the patient opts out, and allows pharmacists to refuse the order if they believe it could endanger the patient's health. These changes expand access to contraception by enabling pharmacists to perform a role previously reserved for physicians and nurse practitioners.
