S 5452 New York Senate · 2023 Regular Session

Prohibits legacy preference as eligible criteria for admission standards

This bill prohibits colleges and universities from using a student's family connection to current graduates as a reason to give them preference during the admissions process. While schools can no longer factor legacy status into their decisions, they are still allowed to ask applicants about their family ties after an admission offer has been made, provided the information is used only for data collection purposes. The law takes effect on July 1st following its enactment and requires any related rules to be updated by that date.
