A 10108 New York Assembly · 2023 Regular Session

Increases the length of the term of office and imposes term limits for members of the legislature

This bill proposes to change how long members of the state legislature serve and how many times they can be reelected. It would extend the standard term for both senators and assembly members from two years to six years, starting with elections in 2024. To prevent individuals from holding power indefinitely, the bill also sets a limit allowing each member to serve a maximum of three consecutive six-year terms. These changes would only apply to terms beginning after the bill is officially adopted and published before the next election.
