Requires instruction on voting in curriculum of students in grade 12 as part of implementation of New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Social Studies.
What changed between versions
New subsection a. requires the State Board of Education to adopt New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Social Studies specifically pertaining to voting, and to ensure instruction on voting is incorporated into the grade 12 curriculum. These standards must be updated concurrently with each regular update to the NJ Student Learning Standards under P.L.2007, c.260 (C.18A:7F-46).
The original effective date provision stated the act takes effect immediately and first applies in the first full school year after enactment. The amended version removes the 'first applicable' language from the effective date clause and instead embeds that timing directly into the new subsection b., which states districts must incorporate the instruction beginning with the first full school year following the date of enactment.
The original subsection a. (requiring each board of education to incorporate voting instruction) was renumbered as subsection b. and now explicitly references 'the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Social Studies' as the framework, tying district implementation to the standards the State Board is now required to adopt under new subsection a.
The STATEMENT section at the end of the bill was removed entirely.
