S 922 New Jersey Senate · 2024-2025 Regular Session

Bars individual from serving as county prosecutor in acting capacity for longer than one year, including pending nominee for position.

This bill limits how long someone can serve as a county prosecutor in a temporary, acting role. It states no person - including a pending nominee - may serve in that position for more than one year. If the Governor hasn’t submitted a nomination to the Senate before the year ends, the acting prosecutor must step down. The bill also requires the Governor to nominate current acting prosecutors within 30 days of the law’s effective date (or by the next Senate session), or they must vacate the position. It applies immediately to all New Jersey county prosecutor offices.
