S 4701 New Jersey Senate · 2024-2025 Regular Session

Requires schools with school lunch programs to offer at least one plant-based meal as part of regular lunch service.

This bill requires all New Jersey schools participating in the National School Lunch Program to offer at least one plant-based meal during regular lunch service each school day. Students (or their parents/guardians) must submit written notice to elect plant-based meals, and schools have 30 days to adjust meal quantities to accommodate all electing students. The plant-based meals must meet USDA nutritional standards, and schools must annually report to the State Department of Agriculture and Education about implementation, including meal types offered and challenges encountered. The bill takes effect at the start of the first full school year after enactment, with schools allowed to prepare in advance.
