Establishes measures to provide employment stability for high school coaches employed in school districts.
This bill establishes guaranteed three-year contracts for head coaches and two-year contracts for assistant coaches in New Jersey public high schools who are tenured district employees or out-of-district hires. It requires automatic reappointment at contract end unless the school board provides 90 days' written notice of non-reappointment. Coaches may only be dismissed during their contract term for "just cause," with a mandatory 5-day written notice of the reason, a 10-day hearing opportunity (with legal counsel and witness presentation), and a board decision within 10 days of the hearing. The law takes effect immediately for the first full school year after enactment.
