Provides for cost-of-living adjustments to allowance for legislative member staff services.
This bill adjusts the fixed $150,000 annual allowance for legislative staff services used by New Jersey state legislators (both Senate and Assembly members) to account for inflation. Starting January 1 after the bill's enactment, the allowance amount will automatically increase each year based on the annual change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island area, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The adjustment is only applied if the CPI rises above zero, and the State Treasurer calculates it by December 1 each year for the following calendar year. This change replaces the current fixed allowance with a cost-of-living adjustment mechanism.
