Requires candidate and joint candidates close campaign depository accounts not later than seven years following end of service in elected public office or unsuccessful election.
This bill (S 3574) requires candidates for public office in New Jersey to close their campaign bank accounts within seven years after leaving elected office or after an unsuccessful election. It applies directly to all candidates who established campaign depositories, including former officeholders and those who ran but were not elected. Any remaining funds in these accounts after seven years that haven't been transferred to permitted campaign uses must be sent to the State General Fund. Candidates with accounts still open beyond this seven-year period must wind up those accounts within one year of the bill's effective date.
